چکیده
I RECENTLY ORDERED A BOOK, BASIC COLOR Terms: Their Universality and Evolution (1), through an online book dealer. The book was simply advertised as a " used book, first edition, dust jacket, good condition. " When it arrived, I opened the front cover and found a bookplate from The Rockefeller University and a tag with the words " Laboratory book—Dr. Hartline. " It has been 20 years since Haldane Keffer Hartline passed away. Hartline shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1967 with Ragnar Granit and George Wald. He was a mentor to many neuroscientists at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and Rockefeller University. I am a direct " academic descendant " of his. My graduate advisor lineage can be traced back through Maureen Powers, Stephen Easter Jr., and Edward MacNichol Jr. to " Keff " Hartline. Words cannot express my feelings about owning a book that was owned by my graduate adviser's adviser's adviser's adviser. We in science need to give thanks to our mentors and those who have blazed the trails before us in our respective fields; we also need to continue to be cognizant of our students and how we may influence them directly or indirectly. In the words of Hartline from his banquet speech at the Nobel ceremony, " Tack sa mycket. " Thank you very much.

Isolation and Study of S-layer Nanostructure of Deinococcus Radiodurans R1
Crystalline surface layer proteins (S-layer proteins) have considerable potential for the crystalline arrays in biotechnology, biomimetics and nonlife applications, including areas such as microelectronics and molecular nanotechnology. The extensive application potential of surface layers in nanobiotechnology is according to the particular inherent attributes of the single molecular arrays cons...
متن کاملOptimization of S-layer protein purification from Deinococcus radiodurans strain R1
S-layer proteins of Deinococcus radiodurans are the best self-assemble systems among other proteins that have an essential role in the fabrication of nanowires. Therefore, the purification of these proteins is necessary. The purpose of this research was to optimize the purification of s-layer protein from D. radiodurans with the response surface method. The three factors of SDS concentration, i...
متن کاملRibosomal proteins of Deinococcus radiodurans: their solvent accessibility and reactivity.
The structure of proteins in native ribosomes from Deinococcus radiodurans R1 was probed by S-methylthioacetimidate (SMTA) modification of amino groups. The extent of protein labeling was quantified using top down methods, and modified positions were identified using bottom up experiments. Each protein's reactivity was predicted by examination of the crystal structures of the D. radiodurans 50S...
متن کاملCrystal structure of the Deinococcus radiodurans single-stranded DNA-binding protein suggests a mechanism for coping with DNA damage.
Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-binding (SSB) proteins are uniformly required to bind and protect single-stranded intermediates in DNA metabolic pathways. All bacterial and eukaryotic SSB proteins studied to date oligomerize to assemble four copies of a conserved domain, called an oligonucleotide/oligosaccharide-binding (OB) fold, that cooperate in nonspecific ssDNA binding. The vast majority of ba...
متن کاملFine structure of the Deinococcus radiodurans nucleoid revealed by cryoelectron microscopy of vitreous sections.
Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the nucleoid of the extremely radioresistant bacteria Deinococcus radiodurans may adopt an unusual ring shape. This led to the hypothesis that the tight toroidal package of the D. radiodurans genome might contribute to radioresistance by preventing diffusion of ends of double-stranded DNA breaks. The molecular arrangement of DNA in the nucleoid, wh...
متن کاملStructure and cellular dynamics of Deinococcus radiodurans single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-binding protein (SSB)-DNA complexes.
The single-stranded DNA (ssDNA)-binding protein from the radiation-resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans (DrSSB) functions as a homodimer in which each monomer contains two oligonucleotide-binding (OB) domains. This arrangement is exceedingly rare among bacterial SSBs, which typically form homotetramers of single-OB domain subunits. To better understand how this unusual structure influenc...
